With increasing age,
the body’s musculoskeletal function gradually declines.
Susceptibility to degenerative diseases and injuries increase,
and the ability to recover from disease and injury declines.
All of these changes result in progressive weakening, impaired
mobility, and an overall decrease in quality of life. However,
with a resistive strength training exercise and range of
motion program, the body’s musculoskeletal function
can remain stable and even improve, possibly reversing the
effects of age-related weakness and debility. Without exercise,
the body’s total muscle mass decreases 50% between
the ages of 20 and 90. At the same time, fat-free body mass
declines 15%, resulting in a slowing of the body’s
metabolism. Loss of lean muscle mass makes people lose energy
and become more sedentary. The importance of exercise for
older people affords an excellent opportunity to engage in
a customized low impact Pilates fitness program. |
