What is Pilates?
A system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed by
Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. The Pilates method exercises
are designed to strengthen and tone muscles, improve posture,
and increase flexibility and balance, while uniting the body
and mind. The focus is to strengthen the “powerhouse”,
or the core of the body. The muscles targeted are the pelvic
floor, deep abdominal muscles, and the large buttock and back
muscles surrounding the pelvis and spine. Pilates uses spring-driven
machines, as well as a series of floor exercises. The Pilates
equipment is unique in the fact that it allows a user to modify
the intensity, by changing the base of support, shifting the
center of gravity, or adjusting the length of levers. This allows
the workout to be customized to your fitness level. |
